Guided Tour Ruhr 25   Inner Harbour Duisburg

Dining in the old bread-basket or how Sir Norman Foster defeated Mr. Softy

In international public Duisburg stands for mining industry and Europe's largest inland port. Since the early Middle Ages the city had its meaning as a transfer point for lang-distance trade and port, but the first basins were laid out in the beginning 19th century between Rhine and Ruhr. A part of a silted up sinuosity of the Rhine just below the city wall was first transformed into a basin.

The first artificial waterway got the name Inner Harbour. Later it developed to the central corn-trade transfer point in Germany. After 1900 several granaries and mills were built - the so-called bread-basket of the Ruhr came into existence. But the Inner Harbour lost its importance after the Second World War. Being pulled down threatened the granaries.

As one of the biggest projects of the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park a new quarter ("working, living and culture near the water") was established on a 90 hectares large area around the Inner Harbour's separated end.

Experience the attractive combination of old harbour facilities, historic mills and granaries and modern architecture on that promenade walk and afterwards - if you like - enjoy the possibilities and advantages of Duisburg's best known gastronomical mile.
