Ruhr District Tour 6 Emperor and canal
Grand boat tour in the Ruhr district
There are many ways to explore the Ruhr district. One of the most exciting ones is by waterway. At the start of this day trip they say: Cast off!
During the boat trip on the Rhine-Herne-Canal you are cruising one of the most important Ruhr district waterways. Beside interesting lock passages typical regional scenery is visible. Shaft towers of former colleries, old pit heaps and modern buildings like the Schalke football stadium are along the route creating an appealing contrast to the green banks which were nicknamed "Miners' Riviera" in the old days due to their function as local recreation areas.
At the end of the trip in Waltrop you will get a guided tour in the Museum "Altes Schiffshebewerk (old lift lock) Henrichenburg". Inaugurated in 1899 this building from the time of Emperor Wilhelm II. is considered to be one of the most expensive and spectacular engineering achievements of the turn of the century. After inspection of this "century act" a bus will take you back to the starting point in Oberhausen.
