Ruhr District Tour 12   Concentrated charge coal district

A weekend in the Ruhr area

We put all our wide experience into this concentrated tour of three days in the Ruhr area. Lots of highlights, multifarious aspects of the region, good food ... trust in us. We have chosen for you.

Day 1
The first highlight is the climb up to a conspicuous landmark on the "Route of industrial culture", the Tetrahedron in Bottrop. At an altitude of 165m you get an overview of the next days' schedule.
The first day ends with a brewery tour at the steam beer brewery Borbeck in Essen with subsequent beer tasting. After the legendary bratwurst by the metre with bread and butter you return to your hotel.

Day 2
"Nicht kleckern, sondern klotzen" (not to take half-measures) is a well known idiom in the region. Therefore the first stop of the day is the world heritage site Pit Zollverein in Essen followed by the next superlative: Europe's highest exhibition room inside the shut down Gasometer Oberhausen. How close living and working lies together in the Ruhr area is to be seen at the working-class housing estate Eisenheim which belonged to the "Gutehoffnungshütte" (Good Hope Steelworks).
The labourers in the iron works in Duisburg-Meiderich really had to toil. Where once blast furnaces radiated intense heat a park landscape of more than 200 hectare came into existence.
At a three-course meal in the restaurant "Hauptschalthaus" you may enjoy the fine view of the elaborate and fascinating illumination of the former iron works which starts at dusk.

Day 3
The sky above the Ruhr is blue again! Up at the lordly Villa Hügel is the place to convince yourself that it is really so. Alfred Krupp already knew where to find the Ruhr area's nicest spots.
Here in southern Essen the largest of the five Ruhr reservoirs is charmingly situated between tree-covered hills. Lake Baldeney dates back to the 1930s. A boat excursion is the best way to explore the lake and while having a luch snack listen to some interesting stories about the region.
