Guided Tour Ruhr 15 Academy Mont-Cenis Herne
From a colliery to a glass palace or Nice at the Ruhr
Founded by the Frenchman Franz August Viviers in the year 1871 in the northern Ruhr area the Mont Cenis mine shaped the destiny of the Sodingen district in Herne and the fate of its population for more than 100 years. With the shutdown of Mont Cenis 1978 Sodingen lost its heart. The decision of the Minister of the Interior of the state of North Rhine Westphalia to move the continuing training academy to Herne opened up the chance for a new technical „masterpiece" on „Mont-Cenis" at the end of the 80s.
A visionary architectural concept by the French team Jourda and Perraudin provides the impulse for the breakthrough to a new age: the neglected site of the old Mont Cenis mine in Herne has received a new face with a gigantic striking glass cover. The futuristic construction is 176m long, 72m wide and 15m high. Its not only an important landmark but also a micro-climate capsule. 10,000 m˛ of the total 20,640 m˛ glass are fitted with solar cells in such a way that all areas in the interior open space and inside the buildings are optimally lit and shaded. It was when built the world's largest roof integrated solar power station.
The temperatures inside the glass palace are 5° centigrade higher than outside. Together with the palm trees, the water basin and the boule area it creates a Mediterranean atmosphere - a trace of Nice in the middle of the mining dicstrict.
